Mehdi Hasan is the Man of the Moment. Some wonderfully glowing tributes have been paid to the maestro who made ghazals come alive, in the last month. The first local channel set the ball rolling by recording a programme to be aired during Eid where contemporary singers belted out some of the most popular songs that Mehdi sahib has rendered while friends and colleagues reminisced and praised the friend whose voice has enthralled for decades. Well known personalities from the world of art and music and literature paid personal tributes to an old friend. Mehdi sahib's presence on stage saw the audience at the gala event giving him a standing ovation. This wonderful evening held in the gardens of the Karachi Parsi Institute. If this was not tribute enough, yet another similar event is to be held to honour the art and life of this living legend of Pakistan. It is being jointly organized by Rahum Inc and DNF Communications/Events and is titled 'Mehdi Hasan-A Tribute of Love, to be held in Karachi in January 2003.

Having given a new identity to the genre of ghazal signing, Mehdi Hasan has enthralled audiences all over the world for many decades. This has undoubtedly elevated him to the level of an international icon that has earned for Pakistan great respect in the world of music. To commemorate this legend and his work, artists in the field of music, art and literature, from Pakistan as well as international icons have been invited to join in to pay tributes to a man who has dedicated his entire life to entrancing music lovers.
